Food for Thought.. and Growth
Bodybuilding is very possible with a vegan diet. Bodybuilding requires a diet that can provide the body with the necessary nutrients to recover from a hard workout and grow new muscle mass.
A diet high in protein is crucial. Much of my protein comes in the form of protein shakes and high protein sources such as tempeh and seitan. I start my day with a protein shake made with soy protein and soy milk, with fresh or frozen fruit blended in. I also have a shake after a workout to help recover and provide my body with the protein it needs for muscle growth.
Throughout the day I have usually have a meal made with tempeh, seitan, usually in a stir fry or with steamed vegetables on the side. Sometimes I’ll have some mock meats, like a vegan burger or chick’n. I bring a couple high protein bars with me as well.
I also drink a lot of water. I usually have at least two liters during the day at work, and another two liters when I get home. I really try to avoid sodas and other high sugar drinks.
I do take a vegan multivitamin. Even though I try to eat well, the nature of bodybuilding requires more nutrients than the average person. Supplementation is helpful and sometimes required if you don’t have the time or budget to get all your nutrients entirely from whole food sources.
